On Friday last week we saw the release of the Saket Choudhary directed film Hindi Medium. Starring Irrfan Khan and Pakistani artist Saba Qamar the film received positive reviews from the critics. However, Hindi Medium which released across just 1126 screens faced stiff competition from the Arjun Kapoor – Shraddha Kapoor starrer Half Girlfriend that released alongside it.
If that wasn’t all Hindi Medium, that featured a non A-list star cast had everything going against it at the box office. However, despite these hurdles, the film got off to a decent start managing to collect Rs. 2.81 cr on its opening day. Over the weekend, the positive reviews and good audience feedback the film rake in Rs. 12.56 cr. But the subsequent Monday, a day which not just heralds the start of the week, but also a customary drop in box office collections, saw the business of Hindi Medium register an increase in collections.
Hindi Medium which raked in Rs. 3.15 cr on Monday witnessed an approximate 12% growth in business on Monday as compared to its opening day collections. Apart from this increase in collections paint a positive picture of the film’s box office journey, with it Hindi Medium has also become the first film of 2017 to show growth on Monday over the opening Day. In fact, contrary to the usual norm where nearly all movies show a drop of 50% or more on Day 4 (Monday) as compared to the opening Day (Friday), Hindi Medium seems to have broken the mould.
In fact, the previous release Badrinath Ki Dulhania that featured Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt showed a drop of 1.38% whereas the second part in the epic Baahubali saga, Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion showed a drop of 1.82%. If that wasn’t all Badrinath Ki Dulhania had at that point of time enjoyed an extended weekend of sorts, with the first Monday after its release being a holiday.
Now considering the fact that Hindi Medium did not enjoy the luxury of the first Monday after release being a holiday, but yet managed to see growth in business only proves that at the end of the day content does matter to the general audience.
