Vishal-Shekhar: Making music charts go Mmm…
By IndiaFM News Bureau, September 6, 2005 - 02:30 IST
They are like their music, easy.
After burning the charts with the groovy Dus Bahane, Vishal-Shekhar have capped another chartbuster. And this time it's for Yashraj! Salaam-Namaste has got the nation foot-tapping to its score. We chatted Shekhar, one half of the music duo to know how the music happened…
Show me the script…
“Well, Siddharth came up to us with a bound script” …which is a rarity even in today's time, we butt in. “Maybe, but in our case, we have worked with directors who know their job and approach us once they have their script in place. I am really thankful that the 'filler' kind of music doesn't work any more. This frees us from making mindless music just to keep distributors happy. With Salaam Namaste, Siddharth knew the script like the back of his hand. We just took on from there.
Any bull dozing from Yashraj?
This is a myth that we did like to burst. They don't behave like 'Hey, we are Yashraj, so we'll talk, you listen'. None of that dadgiri. We would like to say that, they are by far the most 'gentleman production' house we have worked with. Adi has such an understanding of music, it is rare! And his inputs to the compositions are invaluable; we love to have him during our music sittings.
The chant Salaam Namaste…
Vishal and I were jamming and decided that we wanted a hook for the title track. That's how Salaam-Namaste was born. We were very clear that the tempo of the song had to be very upbeat and the mood, very happy. So we worked our way around it. The moment we got the hook, everything else fell into place. And we are very glad that people have taken to the track.
My Dil goes Mmmm…
This was a lot of fun. Because we just had a stray tune in mind and suddenly, the lyrics happened. While dhun was playing, Adi suggested the line; 'My Dil goes Mmm…' we then got the rest of the lyrics in place and wrapped it up real quick. 'Tu Jahan' is another track we loved working on. Once the song was ready, Sonu and Mahalaxmi voice took it to another level all together. It is a very subdue, mellow number.
Like the way the song looks on screen?
Most music composers worry if the picturization has matched upto their songs. We too were worried, but this time it was if our songs had matched up to the picturization! Yahsraj is a place that knows to respect both film and film makers. I think they have done a fantastic job of promoting the songs. The title song looks simply superb and I am sure so does the rest of the film! With Yashraj, it's never, 'You are working for us, it's always, you are part of us!' They simply fabulous to work with!
